The word lava comes from Italian and is probably derived from the Latin word labes, which means a fall or slide. [2] [3] An early use of the word in connection with extrusion of magma from below the surface is found in a short account of the 1737 eruption of Vesuvius, written by Francesco Serao, who described "a flow of fiery lava" as an analogy to the flow of water and mud down the flanks of ...
Lava lake – Molten lava contained in a volcanic crater; Lava field, also known as lava plain – Large, mostly flat area of lava flows; Lava spine – Vertical growth of solid volcanic lava; Lava tube – Natural conduit through which lava flows beneath the solid surface; Lavaka – Type of gully, formed via groundwater sapping
The two main types of lava field structures are defined as sheet flow lava and pillow lava. Sheet flow lava appears like a wrinkled or folded sheet, while pillow lava is bulbous, and often looks like a pile of pillows atop one another. [2] An important aspect of lava flow morphology is a phenomenon known as lava flow inflation.
The word 'malpaís' in Spanish translates to "badland," and this describes the area as being extremely rough and difficult to traverse and unusable for crops.Although a malpaís is often another word for the badlands that form by erosion of sedimentary rocks in the same environment, a malpaís is often associated with such types of lava plain terrain as found in a volcanic field.

Hell's Half Acre Lava Field is a basaltic lava plain located on the Snake River Plain of Idaho in the United States. It is the easternmost of the basaltic lava fields on the Snake River Plain, [1] located about 25 miles (40 km) west of Idaho Falls, Idaho and 30 miles (48 km) north of Pocatello, Idaho. [4]
In some cases, a lava plateau may be part of a single volcano. An example is the massive Level Mountain shield volcano in northern British Columbia , Canada , which covers an area of 1,800 km 2 (690 sq mi) and a volume of 860 km 3 (210 cu mi).
The Apennine mountains form a 15,000 foot (4,600 m) escarpment that rises higher above the Hadley plain than the Himalayan front above the plains of India and Nepal. [6] Hadley Rille (also referred to as Rima Hadley) [ 7 ] is located to the west of the Apollo 15 landing site and was the subject of substantial investigation during that mission.
