Prior to publication of the book the story had been serialized in 1925 as "The Bee Hunter" in Ladies' Home Journal (Feb–May 1925). The book tells the story of a young lady, Lucy Watson, the daughter of a saloon-keeper.

The film is a remake of a 1928 silent film starring Richard Arlen and Mary Brian. Both are based on the Zane Grey 1926 novel of the same name, as is a 1947 film.
