Altun Ha / ɑː l ˈ t uː n h ɑː / [1] is the name given to the ruins of an ancient Maya city in Belize, located in the Belize District about 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Belize City and about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the shore of the Caribbean Sea. The site covers an area of about 8 square kilometres (3.1 sq mi).
Altun Ha lies another 25 km further to the east. The material culture of Chau Hiix shows close ties with both Lamanai and Altun Ha, as well as evidence of interaction with centers in Petén Basin. There are considerable ancient irrigation works at Chau Hiix, so it was probably an agricultural community supplying food for Lamanai.
David Michael Pendergast, FRSC (born 1934) is an American archaeologist, and is most famous for his work at Altun Ha and Lamanai, Belize.He received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 1955 from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his Ph.D. in 1961 at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying with Clement Meighan.
