Phoenix Union High School (PUHS) was a high school that was part of the Phoenix Union High School District in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, one of five high school-only school districts in the Phoenix area. Founded in 1895 and closed in 1982, the school consisted of numerous buildings on a campus which by 1928 consisted of 18 acres.
West High School was one of five Phoenix Union high schools that were built between 1949 and 1957, the others being Camelback, Carl Hayden, Central, and South Mountain. [3] The campus was designed by a group of local architects consisting of Lescher & Mahoney, Edward L. Varney, H. H. Green and Edwin Dwight Chenault. [4]
The school is noted for having built-in lockers in the hallways, at a time when every other school within the Phoenix Union High School District has removed theirs. [4] Film and commercial producers have said the school reminds people of a traditional high school.
