The program was launched in June 2010, by NCESSE in the U.S. and by the Clarke Institute internationally. [3] As of 2018, SSEP has sponsored fourteen missions to LEO – two on board the Space Shuttle, and twelve to the ISS – with a thirteenth mission to the ISS announced in March 2018, and expected to fly in the spring/summer of 2019.
Content on Space Place is broken into six subject matter categories: Universe, Sun, Earth, Solar System, Science and Technology, and Educators. [5] [6] Users can also sort material by articles, activities, and games. [6] Over 40 missions are represented on the Space Place. [7]
The space center uses its simulators in order to create interactive stories, usually applicable to historical events, in which the students are involved. Since November 2020, they also use the planetarium that was built during their 2020 rebuild. Students also learn and apply different aspects of astronomy and science in missions.
Eight category representatives will receive special recognition from the International Space Station (ISS) in addition to receiving physical prints of their creation sent down from space.
The Space Foundation delivers K-12 student programs in laboratory, classroom and after-school settings. Programs include STEM, social studies, history, the arts and literature and are available to individual classes, school districts, public and private school, colleges and universities offering education curriculum and homeschool organizations.
