The Motherwell station was close to the site of the Hamilton line platforms at the present-day Motherwell station. The station was opened on 4 February 1871 by the Caledonian Railway. It was situated to the south of the current Motherwell station. The station closed on 1 August 1885 and was replaced by Motherwell to the north. [1] >
The Caledonian Railway branches in North Lanarkshire built on the Caledonian Railway main line, which opened in 1848. In the following years the considerable increase of iron production and coal extraction in North Lanarkshire led to a progressive expansion of branch lines in the area between the eastern margin of Glasgow and Bellside in the east, and between Coatbridge, Airdrie and Motherwell.
The town has three stations, a main railway station (known simply as Motherwell), Airbles and Shieldmuir. The main station runs on the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow to London and on the East Coast Main Line via Edinburgh and Newcastle, and is located next to Motherwell Shopping Centre.
It obtained an authorising act of Parliament, the Clydesdale Junction Railway Act 1845 (8 & 9 Vict. c. clx), on 31 July 1845, with capital of £330,000. At Motherwell it linked with the Wishaw and Coltness Railway at a point a little east of the present-day station and junction. [1] [2] [3]
The station opened on 2 March 1891 by the Caledonian Railway. The signal box, which opened with the station, was to the west of the westbound platform and the goods yard was to the south. To the north were sidings as well as Lanarkshire steel works. The station closed on 4 January 1965. [1]
The line had previously been used by a limited number of through Inter-City passenger trains between Motherwell and Perth up until the end of the 1980s, having earlier served as part of the Caledonian Railway's main trunk route avoiding Glasgow.
