Whispering Pines is located in northern Gila County in the upper valley of the East Verde River, between Washington Park to the north and Beaver Valley to the south. It is 12 miles (19 km) north of Payson. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Whispering Pines CDP has a total area of 0.43 square miles (1.11 km 2), all land. [3]
Construction of the dam finished in June, 1923, and it remains standing approximately one mile north of Monticello. Lake Shafer remains the more commercial of the Twin Lakes, largely due to the presence of the Indiana Beach Amusement Park and Camp Resort. There are also a vast number of rental cottages and homes as well as boat rental marinas.
The park was named after the area's first settler, John McCormick, who settled on 100 acres (0.40 km 2) there in 1816, along the canyon by the waterfalls. Up to that time, the land had been hunted by Miami Indians. McCormick's Creek Falls is the main attraction at McCormick's Creek State Park.
