Washington County is a county in Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 35,805. [1] Its county seat is Brenham, which is located along U.S. Highway 290, 72 miles northwest of Houston. [2] The county was created in 1835 as a municipality of Mexico and organized as a county in 1837.
In June 1869, Burton sold land to trustees of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and then sold to citizens. The arrival of the railroad after the Civil War benefited the community. The town received its first postmaster on September 23, 1870. By 1910, its population was 600. The community was incorporated on October 25, 1972.
