Its name derives from its location near the border between Inyo and Kern Counties. Inyokern is located 8 miles (13 km) west of Ridgecrest, [5] at an elevation of 2,434 feet (742 m). [4] It is on the western side of the Indian Wells Valley. The population was 988 in the 2020 census, down from 1,099 in the 2010 census.
Juneau was founded in 1845 by settlers Martin Rich and William Dennis. It became the county seat of Dodge County in 1846. The founders originally named the settlement "Victory" and then "Dodge Center", from the German "Deutsch Center", [6] but finding these names in conflict with other places, the town changed its name to Juneau in 1852. These settlements extended beyond the present-day area near Juneau to include Admiralty Island and Douglas Island. In 1890, these were consolidated by the census and reported as "Auk Settlements." [7] It returned simply as "Auke" in 1900 [8] and 1910. [9] It did not report again separately until 1950, by which time it was a suburb of Juneau. [10]
