Greentree Stable, in Red Bank, New Jersey, was a major American thoroughbred horse racing stable and breeding farm established in 1914 by Payne Whitney of the Whitney family of New York City. Payne Whitney operated a horse farm and stable at Saratoga Springs, New York with his brother Harry Payne Whitney , who also had a large stable of horses.
Owned by Greentree Stables, Tom Fool was bred by Duval Headley, a Thoroughbred trainer and nephew of prominent Kentucky breeder Hal Price Headley.Tom Fool was a bay colt by the racehorse and sire Menow out of Gaga by Pharamond II. [1]
During his time with Greentree, John Gaver conditioned seventy-three stakes-winning horses, including winners of five American Classic Races. Four of his horses earned Champions honors with Capot and Tom Fool voted Horse of the Year in 1946 and 1953 respectively. In 1966 John Gaver was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
His performance brought him to the attention of the extremely wealthy Mrs. Payne Whitney, owner of the prominent Greentree Stable in Red Bank, New Jersey. Mrs. Whitney bought out Coucci's contract and in 1932 the seventeen-year-old jockey burst onto the American racing scene with such success that he was being hailed as "The second Earl Sande."

The son of U.S. Hall of Fame trainer James G. Rowe Sr., he initially planned to become a mechanical engineer and graduated from Fordham and Cornell universities. [1] However, in 1913 he went to work for his father as an assistant and later became an assistant to Scott Harlan at Helen Hay Whitney's Greentree Stable where by the mid-1920s he had several horses under his exclusive conditioning.
