Saturnino Perdriel was the founder and first president of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. Perdriel was an outstanding neighbour and merchant during the first few years of the city of La Plata, in addition to being a civil servant at the Treasury Department of the Province of Buenos Aires. He died prematurely in 1888, after one year as club president.
The institution was founded as "Club Cosmopolita de Gimnasia y Esgrima" on 11 November 1880, by fencing and gymnastics enthusiasts in the "Confitería del Aguila", a traditional coffee house of Buenos Aires. Léon Marchand was designed as the first president of the club.

In 1960 Gimnasia y Esgrima contested the "Copa Gobernador de la Provincia de Buenos Aires Dr. Oscar Alende", a friendly competition organized by arch-rival Estudiantes. Cups' name honored Governor of Buenos Aires Province, Oscar Alende. Apart from both teams from La Plata, the cup was contested by Uruguayan Peñarol and Nacional. [24]
