Howard Brown Health Center, named for Howard Junior Brown, was incorporated in 1976 as Howard Brown Memorial Clinic. [1] In the late 1970's, a high rate of hepatitis B among the center's patients inspired Howard Brown to participate in important research studies and vaccine trials against the disease, leading to the first hepatitis B vaccine.

Howard Brown (April 15, 1924 – February 1, 1975) was a founder of the National Gay Task Force (now the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force) and a New York City Health Services Administrator who helped change the image of gay men and lesbians in the United States by coming out publicly in 1973.
