Anti-collision lights, also called beacon lights or strobe lights, are a set of lights required on every aircraft to improve visibility to others, as well as collision avoidance measures by warning other pilots. [1] Historically they have used incandescent light bulbs, but recently LED lamps have been used.
A strobe beacon is a flashing electric lamp used in a variety of industries as an attention-getting device, either to warn of possible hazards, or to attract potential customers. Strobe beacons are similar to rotating beacons, but are more energy efficient , and with no moving parts, are more reliable and less likely to break.
A high-intensity white strobe is used on structures that are taller than 700 feet (210 meters). These lights provide the highest visibility both day and night. Unlike a medium strobe, a high-intensity strobe does not provide 360° coverage; this requires the use of at least 3 high strobes at each level.
The four bulb Beacon Ray Model 175 with a clear dome and colored lenses over the bulbs were used extensively in the 1960s by the NYPD with two red bulbs alternated with a white bulb and an amber bulb canted upwards at a 45-degree angle so the amber flash would reflect off upper-floor building windows for added traffic attention/visibility.
In the 2010s, LED lamps began replacing incandescent lamps in lighthouse applications, [4] so it seems likely the twenty year replacement will use an LED light source. In fact, several VLB-44 LED beacons, [5] also made by Vega Industries, have been installed by the USCG at several locations, including White Island Light [4] and Wood Island Light. [6]
The use of warner light beacons came into force on July 1, 2021, and both the warning triangle and conventional V16 lights can be used until January 2026. After that date, the only legal form of warning device that can be used in Spain is the V16 beacon light that has integrated geolocation and connected to the DGT 3.0 cloud. [2] [3]
