Przemyśl's importance at that time was such that when Austria annexed eastern Galicia in 1772 the Austrians considered making Przemyśl their provincial capital, before deciding on Lwów. [12] In the mid-18th century, Jews constituted 55.6% (1,692) of the population, Latin Catholic Poles 39.5% (1,202), and Greek Catholic Ruthenians 4.8% (147).
From 1412 to 1460, a Ruthenian Orthodox cathedral built of stone stood in the courtyard of Przemyśl Castle, which it was strongly associated with. [2] Construction of the present cathedral in the Gothic style began with the chapter of Bishop Nicholas Błażejowski in 1495. [1] Only the walls and pillars remain from this building.
The first legal regulation regarding the Jewish community of Przemyśl dates from March 20, 1559. The privilege, granted by King Zygmunt August, stipulates that "Jews have been living on the Jewish street in Przemyśl for a long time" have the right to settle permanently in Przemyśl and grants them trading rights.
