Southern Arkansas University began its football program in 1911 when the school was known as the Third District Agricultural School. The Muleriders first conference affiliation came in 1930 when the school joined the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference. SAU competed in the AIC until moving from NAIA to the NCAA Division II in 1995.

SAU was in a transitional period during the 1995 & 1996 seasons. However, any fears that Mulerider fans has about SAU's ability to compete at the NCAA Division II level were put to rest during the 1997 season.
