The station was originally opened in 1911 for the sole purpose of serving the book publisher Doubleday, Page & Company, which had moved in 1910 from Manhattan to Garden City, where co-founder and vice-president Walter Hines Page lived. It is named for the publisher's "Country Life Press" that was located across the tracks.

Its southern terminus is located at the Pennsylvania state line south of the town of Vestal in Broome County , where it becomes Pennsylvania Route 267 (PA 267).
It is adjacent to the Navesink River and Shadow Lake. The settlement is mainly made up of small single-family homes on a peninsula between the river and lake, though parts of the community stretch north of the lake. The community's one elementary school, River Plaza Elementary, is located north of the lake on Hubbard Avenue (County Route 12).
