Younkers Inc. (/ ˈ j ɒ ŋ k ər z /) [2] is an American online retailer and former department store chain founded as a family-run dry goods business in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa. The retailer had evolved over more than 150 years to include a presence in locations throughout Iowa and bordering states in the Midwest region of the United States.
Their flagship store moved to this location in November 1899. [2] The original Tea Room opened in 1913 and was replaced in 1927. The building installed the first escalator in Iowa, known as the "electric stairs", in this building in 1939. [2] Younkers closed their downtown Des Moines location on August 12, 2005.
The stores in Indiana and Ohio soon became Carson Pirie Scott [8] and Elder-Beerman, respectively. The three Michigan stores continued to be positioned as Parisian until 2013, when they became Carson's stores. [9] From 2011 through 2017, the company did not post a net profit. It also had a somewhat high degree of executive turnover.
