Poquoson (/ p ə ˈ k oʊ s ən /), informally known as Bull Island, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,460. [4] The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Poquoson with surrounding York County for statistical purposes.

In 1975, the county lost 15.5 square miles (40.1 km 2) of land as the incorporated town of Poquoson, which had been within York County, became an independent city, although ties between the county and the new city remained close. Over 40 years later, they continue to share courts, sheriff's office, a jail, and some constitutional services.
The Poquoson River is an 11.7-mile-long (18.8 km), [1] mostly tidal river in the state of Virginia. The river is an estuarine inlet of the Chesapeake Bay , entering just south of the mouth of the York River .
