The main settlements on the bay include Tiki Island located at the mainland base of the Galveston Causeway, and Jamaica Beach on Galveston Island, just south of Galveston Island State Park. Jamaica Beach, a resort with a population of about 1,075 was found in 1957 on the site of a former Karankawa Indian burial ground. [3]
Tiki Island is largely man-made and was built in the 1960s, when developers dug canals and used the fill to elevate the land to between four and ten feet above sea level. At first, Tiki was primarily a small fishing camp, though it evolved into a place for weekend homes, then into a village that was incorporated on August 30, 1982. [ 1 ]

The Bolivar Peninsula itself is a census-designated place, in Galveston County, Texas, United States, and part of the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. The entire peninsula was severely damaged during Hurricane Ike on September 13, 2008; [ 1 ] re-building efforts were still continuing as late as 2013.
Bolivar Peninsula (/ ˈ b ɒ l ɪ v ər / BOL-i-vər) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Galveston County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,769 at the 2020 census. The communities of Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach, Caplen, Gilchrist, and High Island are located on Bolivar Peninsula.
