The Ice Hockey World Championship is an annual ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The IIHF has given directorate awards for play during each year's championship tournament to the top goaltender, defenceman and forward (all since 1954), and most valuable player chosen by media (since 1999).
The teams in the championship play a preliminary and qualifying round, then the top eight teams play in the playoff medal round and the winning team is crowned World Champion. From the 1920 Olympics until the 1976 World Championships, only athletes designated as "amateur" were allowed to compete in the tournament.
The 'Top Division' features the top ten ranked hockey nations in the world. After each tournament, the Directorate of the IIHF selects the Best Goaltender, Best Defenceman, and Best Forward of the tournament. Winners of these awards, along with the countries they represent, are shown below from the first official tournament in 1977 until present.
