A previous route numbered FM 2874 was designated on June 28, 1963, from RM 33, 9.9 miles (15.9 km) south of Garden City, via St. Lawrence to a point 5.0 miles (8.0 km) west of RM 33. On May 5, 1966, the road was extended west 5.8 miles (9.3 km) to RM 1800 (now SH 137). FM 2874 was cancelled on September 20, 1973, and transferred to RM 2401.

On November 30, 1932, SH 9 was extended north to the Oklahoma state line. [10] On February 8, 1933, SH 9 Loop was designated in Tulia. [11] The section from Amarillo to Oklahoma would eventually be overlaid with U.S. Route 287. On June 11, 1935, a new route through Comfort was created, and the old route is now Old No. 9 Highway.
