The 1960 Beloe Report was commissioned to look into a new exam which became the CSE.. The CSE was introduced to provide a set of qualifications available to a broader range of schoolchildren and distinct from the GCE (), that were aimed at the academically more able pupils, mostly those at grammar and independent schools (rather than secondary modern schools). [4]
In 2014, CSE partnered with the University of Chicago Press to use the successful online platform of The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS or CMS; which provides users with search and personal annotation of the manual) to publish Scientific Style and Format online. [3] As of 2024, it is in the 9th edition [4].
The GATE is used as a requirement for financial assistance (e.g. scholarships) for a number of programs, though criteria differ by admitting institution. [2] In December 2015, the University Grants Commission and MHRD announced that the scholarship for GATE-qualified master's degree students is increased by 56% from ₹ 8,000 (US$92) per month to ₹ 12,400 (US$140) per month.
