Homeschooling or home schooling (American English), also known as home education or elective home education (EHE) (British English), [1] is the education of school-aged children at home or a variety of places other than a school.
Holt's Growing Without Schooling newsletter, founded in 1977, was America's first home education newsletter. He also set up John Holt's Bookstore, which made selected books available by mail order. This brought in additional revenue that helped sustain the newsletter, which carried very little advertising.
The United States Department of Education estimates that 1.5 million K–12 students were homeschooled in the United States in 2007 (with a confidence interval of 1.3 million to 1.7 million), constituting nearly three percent of students. The National Home Education Research Institute estimates this number to be 1.92 million. [5]
