It is one of the oldest universities in the country with rich history (Indonesian: Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru) in Medan. On 27 August 1957, the college was absorbed into the University of North Sumatra as a result it became the university's Faculty for Teachers Training and Education (Indonesian: Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan). Universitas Methodist Indonesia (UMI) Medan was named Perguruan Tinggi Methodist Indonesia (PTMI). It was a private university founded by the Methodist Church of Indonesia (GMI) in accordance with the decision of the annual conference which took place in Medan on 31 January 1965. Preparation of UMI officially began on August 1, 1965.
