Ashford was founded in 1891 along the Alabama Midland Railway line between Montgomery and Bainbridge, Georgia. The depot was built the next year, and served as the commercial hub of the town.
The Grosvenor Hall estate was bought by the Home Office for use as a regional training centre on 1 January 1973 and was officially opened by Mark Carlisle, the Secretary of State for the Home Office on 6 July 1973.
