The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres (267.12 km 2). [1] On June 19, 1936, it was renamed Black Warrior National Forest, [5] which in turn was renamed William B. Bankhead National Forest on June 6, 1942. [6] [7] In 1959, Executive Order 10850 removed land from the forest's boundaries.

The trail was funded by a US$280,000 federal matching grant with US$210,000 provided by the federal government and US$70,000 of matching funds from the chambers of commerce or convention and visitors bureaus of the 13 counties, the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Association, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and several corporate sponsors. There are four main hiking trails within the National Forest and three of these are also mountain biking trails. In particular, part of the Bartram Trail runs through the National Forest. There are also horse trails, two fish ponds, the Uchee Shooting Range, Tsinia Wildlife Viewing Area, primitive camping and the Taska Recreation Area. [3]
