The QS World University Rankings are a ranking of the world's top universities produced by Quacquarelli Symonds published annually since 2004. In 2024, they ranked 1500 universities, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of Oxford, Harvard University and University of Cambridge taking the top 5 spots. [15]
In 2015, the university moved to its present campus off of Lugogo Bypass Road. In 2016, ISBAT was elevated to a full university, having met the requirements of the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). [4] On 18 November 2019, the university acquired charter status from the UNCHE. [5]
The university was established in 2011. It is the first higher education institution in Uganda to teach its syllabus entirely online. The university adopted the name Virtual University of Uganda (VUU), from 2011 until 2019. VUU admitted its first cohort of students in January 2012. [4]
The trade school that became Makerere University began operating in 1921 with the first classes in carpentry, building construction and mechanics. [12] In 1922, it was founded as the "Uganda Technical College" with additional courses in the arts, education, agriculture and medicine.
