Andhra University was inaugurated in temporary premises at Bezawada in 1926 by Lord Goschen, the first chancellor. Goschen was the governor of Madras Presidency from April 1924 to June 1929. He was succeeded by Lord Erskine, who was in the chair up to March 1940 except for a brief interregnum from 18 June 1936 to 1 October 1936.

The Andhra University College of Engineering was established in 1955 as the Department of Engineering by Prof. Devaguptapu Seethapathi Rao (Electrical) and Prof. Kalavapudi Krishnamacharyulu (Civil Engineering) under the administrations of Vice Chancellor V.S. Krishna and further support by Vice Chancellor A L Narayana.
He refused many titles and honours. The Andhra University, recognising the key role played by him for Telugu Literary Service, the development of the Andhra University Library and Public Libraries conferred honorary doctorate with the title of "Kalaprapurna" to Abburi on August 3, 1974, in their 47th Convocation. The College was shifted to University campus in the year 1949. It owes its genesis to Dr. C. R. Reddy, its founding vice-chancellor. The college was part of the Department of Arts, Commerce and Law College from the beginning, but was reconstructed as a separate college of law on 14 April 1989.
