The Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916, one of the first national forests in the eastern United States. The new preserve included approximately 86,700 acres (35,100 ha) that had been part of the Biltmore Estate, but were sold to the federal government in 1914 by Edith Vanderbilt.
Maintained by the United States Forest Service, it comprises 11,786 acres (47.70 km 2) around the Linville River, and is situated inside the Pisgah National Forest. The river is approximately 1,400 feet (430 m) below the ridge, thus hiking in and out of the Gorge is challenging and enjoyable for those who like serious hiking.

Table Rock is a mountain in the east rim of Linville Gorge, part of Pisgah National Forest (Grandfather Ranger District) in North Carolina. It features a distinctive rock formation, and is a prominent peak in the area. [2] The peak makes for a quick hike from a nearby parking area, and is also very popular for rock climbing. [3]
It is an expert-level trail, and considered "one of the toughest mountain bike trails in Pisgah National Forest." [4] [5] [6] It is primarily a downhill trail, about 3.1 miles (5.0 km) in length. It can be combined with other trails to form a loop of about 14 miles (23 km), requiring anywhere from three to six hours to complete. [3] [7]
Its first 13,400 acres (54 km 2) have been part of the National Wilderness Preservation System since the System was created in 1964. It now includes 18,483 acres (74.80 km 2), and is managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the Pisgah National Forest. It is separated from Middle Prong Wilderness to the southwest, by NC 215.
Grassy Ridge Bald is a bald mountain in North Carolina and is part of the Roan Highlands, within the Pisgah National Forest. Its elevation reaches 6,184 feet (1,885 m) and is on the boundary between Avery County, North Carolina (highest point) and Mitchell County, North Carolina. The mountain generates feeder streams for the North Toe River.
