Closed-end funds are traded on exchanges, and in that respect they are like exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but there are important differences between these two kinds of security. The price of a closed-end fund's shares is completely determined by investor demand, and this price often diverges substantially from the NAV of the fund assets.
Open-end funds called mutual funds and ETFs are common. As of 2019, the top 5 asset managers accounted for 55% of the 19.3 trillion in mutual fund and ETF investments. [ 13 ] However, for active management , the top 5 account for 22% of the market, with the top 10 accounting for 30% and the top 25 accounting for 39%. [ 13 ]
These new regulations encouraged the development of open-end mutual funds (as opposed to closed-end funds). [17] In 1936, U.S. mutual fund industry was nearly half as large as closed-end investment trusts. But mutual funds had grown to twice as large as closed-end funds by 1947; growth would accelerate to ten times as much by 1959.
