A moccasin is a shoe, made of deerskin or other soft leather, [1] consisting of a sole (made with leather that has not been "worked") and sides made of one piece of leather, [1] stitched together at the top, and sometimes with a vamp (additional panel of leather).
Moccasins of twined tule and stuffed with grass were the most common type of footwear. Deerskin moccasins were worn during dry weather. An apron like kilt was also seen within communities, similar to the breechcloth of Eastern communities. Women wore short gowns or tops similar to the men, along with a deerskin skirt or a fringed apron.
The nine Indian delegates stand on the floor to the right and wear traditional attire of deerskin moccasins and robes, braided hair, and feathered or beaded accessories. Senauki , Tomochichi's wife and the sole woman in the group, wears a pink English-style jacket and petticoats.
Mandan women wore ankle-length dresses made of deerskin or sheepskin. This would often be girded at the waist with a wide belt. Women's hair was worn straight down in braids.
