In 2011, Nainital had an average literacy rate of 92.93%, higher than the Uttarakhand state average of 78.82% - around 96.09% males and 89.47% females in the town are literate. [29] A special Census taken in September 1880, at the height of the tourism season, returned a total population of 10,054 for the town. [28]
Nainital district is located in the Kumaon Himalaya. The district has part of the Bhabar tract in its south, which is bordered to the north by the Sivalik hills . To the north of this is the Lesser Himalayas, with a maximum altitude of 2600m.
