The portion of modern Route 171 between South Woodstock and Woodstock Valley was part of an early toll road known as Woodstock and Somers Turnpike. This section of the turnpike became part of a state highway in 1922 with the designation Highway 183. Old Highway 183 continued south of Woodstock Valley to Eastford along modern Route 198.
The Center Turnpike was chartered in May 1826 as a road from the center of Tolland to the village of Quinebaug via Westford, North Ashford, and North Woodstock.In 1922, a portion of the Center Turnpike was designated as State Highway 151, which began at New England Route 32, and followed Turnpike Road, Boston Hollow Road, Centre Pike, and Old Turnpike Road to the Massachusetts state line.
On January 1, 1959, with the decommissioning of Route 91, Route 198 was extended east to US 6. [4] In 1963, Routes 171 and 198 were rerouted, with the northern terminus of Route 198 being moved to the state line. In 1998, the southern terminus was moved 0.05 miles (0.080 km) north with a rerouting of US 6. [5]
