Kebara 2 was the first Neanderthal specimen for which the hyoid bone was preserved, a bone found in the throat and closely related to the vocal tract. While the hominin skeletal remains themselves date to around 42 ka, the charcoals retrieved from Simanya cave are confirmed to be older, at least 49 ka in age. Simanya cave is well documented to preserve several cultural stages in human history, including a 5-30 cm-thick Holocene cap and a primary sequence that dated to the Pleistocene.
