Pudukkottai district is bounded on the northeast and east by Thanjavur District, on the southeast by the Palk Strait, on the southwest by Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, and on the west and northwest by Tiruchirapalli District. As of 2011, the district had a population of 1,618,345 with a sex-ratio of 1,015 females for every 1,000 males.

The Thirumayam Fort is a 40-acre wide [1] fortress in the town of Thirumayam in Pudukkottai-Karaikudi Highway in Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu, India. It was constructed by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad in 1687. Later the fort was handed over to his brother in law Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman.
Karambakkudi is a panchayat town as well as Taluk in Pudukkottai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Karambakkudi is located about 40 km from Thanjavur and 40 km from Pudukkottai. This town is located on the border of the Thanjavur and Pudukkottai district in Tamil Nadu.
It is located in the southeast of the district, on the Palk Strait coast. State Highway 200 runs through the town, which is the headquarters and namesake of Manamelkudi taluk . Pudukkottai State covered a total area of 1,178 square miles (3,050 km 2) and had a population of 438,648 in 1941. It extended over the whole of the present-day Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu (with the exception of Aranthangi taluk which was then a part of Tanjore district). The town of Pudukkottai was its capital.
