The National Park Service (NPS) is an agency of the United States federal government, within the US Department of the Interior.The service manages all national parks; most national monuments; and other natural, historical, and recreational properties, with various title designations.
The NPS has twelve administrative regions. [4] Each region provides oversight and guidance to the park units within its geographic area. They were established in 2018 following a Department of Interior-wide reorganization that created unified regions for all of the departments' bureaus. [5] The NPS formerly had seven administrative regions.
Counting methodology is rooted in the language of a park's enabling legislation. Furthermore, the NPS contributes resources to "affiliated areas" which do not fall under its administration, and these do not count toward the official list number. An example is Oklahoma City National Memorial.
