Trenor Park purchased the land the house sits on in North Bennington, Vermont from his father-in-law, Hiland Hall. The “Big House” was under construction from 1864 to 1865, on a property of almost 200 acres (0.81 km 2), and was designed by New York architectural firm Diaper and Dudley. The house was built in the Second Empire style.
The Dominion Coal Company began operating in New Waterford in 1907 drawing in many workers mainly from Irish and Scottish Catholic backgrounds. The name likely comes from the Irish city of Waterford. New Waterford was incorporated as a town in 1913. On July 25, 1917, 65 people were killed in a coal mine explosion at New Waterford's No. 12 Colliery.
