The Umbrellas, Japan–USA, 1984–91 was a 1991 environmental artwork in which artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude erected yellow and blue umbrella structures in California (between Gorman and Grapevine [1]) and Japan, respectively.
In 2001 the artist created his project "The Lamb Umbrellas for Peace" in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. [2] He began with a 3-day workshop in Washington, D.C. for 38 children who had lost their parents in the attack, each of them expressing their feelings in colorful ways on the umbrellas.
