Under government pressure in 1805, the Lower Creek ceded their lands east of the Ocmulgee River to the state of Georgia, but they refused to surrender the sacred mounds. They retained a 3-by-5-mile (4.8 km × 8.0 km) area on the east bank called the Ocmulgee Old Fields Reserve. It included both the mounds on the Macon Plateau and the Lamar mounds.
By the 1960s, the Grand had ceased showing movies and plans were made to replace it with a parking lot. [4] Those plans were blocked in 1967 by the Macon Arts Council, a group formed to save and restore the Grand; the group held a fundraising gala featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and had the property placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The museum first opened in 1956 [2] [3] and started as a room in the Wesleyan Conservatory with a few activities for children. In 1964, the museum moved locations with the construction of a gallery and workshop. A year later, a planetarium would be added as a new wing of the museum. A 1980 addition included most of the museum's infrastructure.
