Richard Charles Thompson (born April 23, 1979) is a professional baseball outfielder, who played in Major League Baseball with the Kansas City Royals in 2004 and the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012. Thompson spent most of his 12-year career playing in Minor League Baseball , and retired in 2013 after a foot and head injury.
On 10 September 2010 Thompson picked up his first major league win after the Angels went into extra innings against the Seattle Mariners. Thompson made his only Australian Baseball League appearances in the 2010–11 season pitching in three games for his native Sydney Blue Sox. On 14 April 2012, the Angels designated Thompson for assignment.
The Phillies won their first game under Thomson, blanking the Los Angeles Angels 10–0, then would go on to win 13 of their next 15 games, moving back into playoff contention. With Thomson's appointment as interim manager, he became the first Canadian to manage a major league team since George Gibson managed the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1934. [ 16 ]
