Gaines was among the fifth generation of his sharecropper family to be born on the Riverlake Plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. That became the setting and premise for many of his later works. He was the eldest of 12 children, raised by his aunt, who was disabled and had to crawl to get around the house.
Among his co-authored works are Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture, 1735-1835, published by The Historic New Orleans Collection, [3] [4] and New Roads and Old Rivers: Louisiana's Historic Pointe Coupee Parish, published by LSU Press.
