St. Mary's on the Flats, originally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, [1]: 34–35 [2]: 8 was the first Catholic church building in Cleveland, Ohio.The location where the church once stood can be found, in an 1881 atlas, [3] at the south-east corner of Columbus Ave. and then Girard Ave. on the east bank of the Cuyahoga river in the flats.
Bishop Rappe established St. John's Cathedral on Superior Street and Erie Street (today's East 9th Street) on land purchased in 1845 by St. Mary's pastor Rev. Peter McLaughlin. He selected architect Patrick Keely, who designed the building in an ornamental gothic style, and the bishop laid the cornerstone on October 22, 1848. [2]

St. Mary's congregation's first priest was Polish. But after he departed, trouble arose when the Diocese of Scranton appointed, not once, but twice, a Lithuanian priest to St. Mary's. The Poles objected on the grounds that their greater number, earlier arrival and greater financial contribution entitled them to preference.
