University Grants Commission (UGC; ISO: Viśvavidyālaya Anudāna Āyōga) is a statutory body under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was set up in accordance to the UGC Act 1956 [2] and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education in India.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also maintains a list fake Universities operating in India. UGC has said that these 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions functioning in contravention of the UGC Act have been declared as fake and are not entitled to confer any degrees. [ 14 ]
The UGC is the apex body of all the affiliated public, private and international universities of Bangladesh. It provides funds for "Government Funded Universities" of Bangladesh. Its mission is to ensure the quality of higher education throughout the country. Private universities must obtain permission from UGC before they operate.
As of 14 November 2023, the UGC lists 124 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status. [2] In 2017, a distinct category of deemed universities was established called Institutes of Eminence Deemed to be Universities, which are regulated differently from other deemed universities to develop into world-class institutions.

The University Grants Commission Act, 1956 [1] is an Act of the Parliament of India. [2] The Act is sometimes referred to as "the UGC Act" and, among other things, regulates central assistance for public universities. [3]
