Tabaxi were created at least partially in the image of cats. According to Volo's Guide to Monsters, tabaxi were created by a specific divine figure called the Cat Lord (p.113). Thus, tabaxi are not evolved from cats, nor do they share a common ancestor. However, the Cat Lord "gifts each of his children with one specific feline trait."
Both tabaxi and tortles use the following phrasing: Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
The tabaxi's Feline Agility trait says (Volo's Guide to Monsters, p. 115): When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. This feels extremely excessive (because I think that speed would be over 135 miles per hour), but usually, I care more about everyone having fun than being a rules lawyer.
So a tabaxi's base speed is 30'. Assume my character is a 10th-level monk (+20' speed), a 6th-level Barbarian (+10' speed from fast movement ), a 2nd-level Rogue (with the cunning action feature), a 2nd-level Fighter (with the action surge feature), and has the mobile feat (+10' speed).

(Needs to be raging for Elk Totem Spirit: do this as a bonus action on an earlier round, and make sure you keep your rage going until you can pull this turn off.)
Tabaxi speak Common. Tabaxi as a player race are described in Volo's Guide to Monsters starting on page 113. Their Language trait states: Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice. Tabaxi NPC statblocks (for example, the tabaxi hunter from Tomb of Annihilation, p. 232) confirms this:
Further confusion about Tabaxi vs. tabaxi is sown by Fires of Zatal, an adventure set in Maztica. In it, there are no Tabaxi[the tribe], but a tabaxi[the race] NPC named Chioptl features prominently. And, most importantly to answer your question. Ultimately, we settled on using the tabaxi because it offered us more freedom in the design of the ...
Unarmed strikes also have fixed damage output: a tabaxi claw attack is an unarmed strike. ... your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Tabitha the Tabaxi Bard, strength of 10, is 30 feet from, for instance, a hell hound If she has a Strength score of 10, her running long jump distance would normally be 10 feet (i.e. with a running start of 10 feet before she jumps); with a standing long jump, she could only jump half that distance, for a total of 5 feet.
During the Spellplague, Maztica was switched with Laerakond (although not in geographically identical spaces). Maztica was sent to Abeir, while Laerakond came from there. (Abeir was a second planet that was once merged with Toril). Maztica returned with the Sundering, and Laerakond also remained. The kingdom of Unther (a human empire) also ...
