The Piddletrenthide Hoard is a Roman coin hoard dating from the 3rd century AD, found near Piddletrenthide, Dorset. It consisted of 2,114 base silver radiates found in a pottery vessel. The coins date to between 253 and 296 AD. [1] The hoard was found by metal detectorist Brian Read in 2016. [2]
The Hinton St Mary Mosaic is a large, almost complete Roman mosaic discovered at Hinton St Mary, Dorset, England in 1963. It appears to feature a portrait bust of Jesus Christ as its central motif, which could be the oldest depiction of Jesus Christ anywhere in the Roman Empire. [1] A second mosaic was found during 2022 excavations on the site. [2]
Finds found during the excavations include an uninscribed British coin, Roman pottery, leg bones, coins, and a 2nd-century burial. [2] The amphitheatre may have been out of use by the mid-2nd century, [ 3 ] although objects found on the arena floor and elsewhere suggest activity in the 4th century.
The Bucknowle Roman villa found at Bucknowle Farm is the first substantial villa to be found south of the Purbeck Hills. [6] It was excavated between 1976 and 1991. The first signs to its existence were unearthed in 1975 as fragments of pottery were found in a field by Tony Brown, [5] who was allowed to dig a small trench in the area.
