Soban Singh Jeena University (SSJ University) is a state university [1] situated at Almora, Uttarakhand, India. The university was established in 2020 under the Soban Singh Jeena University Act, 2019 (Uttrakhand Act No. 19 of 2020), [ 2 ] which was approved by the cabinet of Uttarakhand in October 2019. [ 3 ]

Almora town was the administrative headquarters of the Kumaun district; which was formed in 1815 following the defeat of Gorkha army in the Anglo-Gorkha war and the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. The Kumaun district then consisted of the complete Kumaon Division excluding the Terai district with its headquarters at Kashipur . [ 4 ]
