The Jeep Liberty (KJ), or Jeep Cherokee (KJ) outside North America, is a compact SUV that was produced by Jeep from 2002 to 2007. Introduced in May 2001 as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ) , the unibody Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.
The 42LE was modified in 2003 as the 42RLE, originally for the then-new Jeep Liberty. It is a 42LE transaxle, modified for use in rear-wheel drive vehicles by removing the integral differential and transfer chain. Power flow exits the rear of the transmission. The case has also been modified.
The ID number C300-15 is stamped on the case. The output for the front drive shaft is on the right side and the rear output in line with the input. Low range is 2.62:1. One common modification of the Dana 300 is to add oil paddles to the main shaft to prevent oil starvation of the rear bearing. The Dana 300 was used in Jeep CJs from 1980 to 1986.
