Vergennes was settled in 1766 by Donald MacIntosh. It was established as a city in 1788, [1] the only one in Vermont not to have been first chartered as a town or independent village. Instead, intersecting portions of the pre-existing towns of New Haven, Panton, and Ferrisburg at the Otter Creek Falls were combined to form Vergennes. [1]

Wilgus State Park is a state park in Ascutney, Vermont. The park offers canoeing along the Connecticut River and hiking up the Pinnacle Trail. The park has tent and lean-to sites and is quite close to Mount Ascutney and the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site .
CCC crews, whose encampment remains are also found in the area, built the main access road, the beach house and the beach between 1934 and 1936.
