Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel; [1] 26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria. As such, he was consort of the British monarch from their marriage on 10 February 1840 until his death in 1861.
A Favourite Greyhound of Prince Albert is an 1841 oil on canvas painting by the British artist Edwin Landseer. It depicts Eos, a greyhound that Prince Albert brought with him to England when he married Queen Victoria. [1] It is also known by the shorter title Eos. [2] Landseer was known for his portrait paintings of animals.
By 1836, Victoria's maternal uncle Leopold, who had been King of the Belgians since 1831, hoped to marry her to Prince Albert, [23] the son of his brother Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
