The Faculty of Theology was established by archbishop Péter Pázmány, as part of a new university, in Nagyszombat, the Kingdom of Hungary (today Trnava, Slovakia) in 1635 (the original university church is now the Cathedral of Trnava). This university was transferred to the present-day Budapest in 1777 and named after Pázmány in 1921.
